Our Proven Pruning Method to Renew the Life of Your Plants!

With renewal pruning, your plants will survive and thrive for years to come offering a breathtaking and robust landscape.

Sometimes we encounter landscapes that have certainly seen better days. Unfortunately, some plants can take on an overgrown, tired look through neglect or improper maintenance. Often, the gut reaction is to eradicate the shrub and replace it with something new – which can be costly.

Let’s save the plants together! You can give tall, overgrown, and leggy deciduous shrubs a new lease on life through renewal pruning.

What is Renewal Pruning?

  • Removal of the oldest, heaviest stems as close to the ground as possible.
  • This works on deciduous shrubs and stimulates new shoots to grow just below the ground-level pruning cut.
  • New shoots will give you dense, rejuvenated, vigorous growth.

Watch out! Homeowners can fall prey to the “haircut” technique of pruning. This destroys the natural form and beauty of the shrub and results in taller, leggier, and thinner plants.

Renewal Pruning:

When?

The proper timing of renewal pruning is vitally important. Severely overgrown shrubs will respond best if pruned in early spring, just before new growth emerges. Conversely, badly neglected, overgrown shrubs should be pruned gradually over three years.

How?

Remove only one-third to one-half of the old heavy stems each year, allowing new, healthier shoots to develop. You will be pleasantly surprised by how well many shrubs respond to renewal pruning. After renovation, it is essential to maintain a regular pruning schedule by removing two or three of the older branches each year.

Why?

Maintaining shrubs this way will ensure they remain attractive, vigorous, and healthy. The goal is to rejuvenate the life and health of your plants.

What?

Shrubs that respond well to renewal pruning include spirea, forsythia, lilac, honeysuckle, mock orange, and willow.
