PLAY WITH PURPOSE

“The outdoor space is important to us as a school, but more so to the children’s development. They get to learn about who they are, and they get to learn about that outside.” — Jake Ibbetson, Head of School at Veritas Christian Academy

Fostering Learning Through Play

Educational Play Space | Multi-Zone Playground + Gathering Area

Veritas Christian Academy, a preschool through grade 12 private school, had recently moved its elementary students to a consolidated campus and needed a reimagined outdoor space that could spark their imagination and bring the school community together. The result? A campus transformation that blends creativity and structure, nature and nurture.

TIMELINE

8 WEEKS

BUDGET

$250,000

LOCATION

O’Fallon, MO

Fast, Focused, Collaborative

We began by reshaping the terrain with expert grading, setting the foundation for each element to follow. Next, we coordinated asphalt paving with our partners at Gevers Paving, installing nearly 750 linear feet of 9-foot-wide paths to guide students safely through the space.

As the structure took shape, our crew moved swiftly to install custom hardscape features, including 16 hand-cut natural stone benches that define the gathering area and offer students and staff a place to relax and connect. We layered in trees and playground mulch, carefully placing each element to support both durability and beauty. From the installation of benches around shade trees to the community-supported Tire Run (which was painted by school volunteers), every detail was approached with care and purpose.

We were able to adapt in real-time as needed throughout the project, staying closely aligned with the school’s leadership every step of the way. The result: a smooth, supportive collaboration and a finished space that delivered on every promise.

The Transformation

BEFORE

Before our work began, the area was a simple, grassy field—a blank canvas with untapped potential.

DESIGN

We designed the space to incorporate unique recycled materials and set the stage for interactive and imaginative play. In addition to the play structures that foster gross motor development, we incorporated benches and other rest areas throughout the space to encourage conversation and connection.

AFTER

The finished space blends seamlessly into the school’s campus: inviting, functional, and built to last.

FAQs

The cost of landscaping is difficult to generalize without site-specific information and an understanding of the specific vision for your home. However, Realtors published an article that states that a homeowner can expect to spend between 10-12% of the cost of their home on landscaping. We have found that for many projects, this is a fairly accurate projection, however, many projects are above or below that average based on the homeowner’s objectives, specific site requirements, and finished material selections.

Absolutely. We work with homeowners on a regular basis to create phasing plans for their projects. We will phase a project to meet the clients’ initial budget goals, while maintaining a cohesive design that can be flawlessly completed in 2 stages or 10, based on your specific needs.

There’s typically not a lot of maintenance in the first year or two after plants are installed.  The above ground growth is minimal as the plants are trying to get root establishment as vigorously as possible.

Most plants require at least a light pruning each year (spring and fall are best) and it may be necessary to remove some dead wood or dormant material after the winter season.

The most important thing you can do to care for your plants is adhere to a strict watering plan, especially within the first year after installation.  Click here to learn more about how to water your plants.
